Ottawa Adds GPS to Public Transit
(Posted On March 12, 2012 by Mark Rummel)After a good bit of haggling over the details of the system, city officials in Ottawa have finally decided to release a GPS app to help users of public transit follow bus routes. The city joins others around the world that are experimenting with the use of GPS to help managers and passengers alike determine exactly where buses are at any given time.
Some
Ottawa officials hesitated to make a bus-tracking GPS app available,
for a variety of different reasons. Financially, some worried that the
public transit department would be forced to spend money to help users
figure out how to use the app. More importantly, though, there was a
concern that outside developers could prevent the system from working
efficiently. Independent programmers might create their own apps using
the public GPS-created information, and if those apps were low quality,
difficult to use, or unreliable, they could sabotage the city’s efforts.
Also, companies that spent money to advertise on the city’s official
app would lose much of their incentive if redundant apps appeared at the
same time.
According to representatives, negotiations have succeeded in addressing these problems to everyone’s satisfaction, and users of Ottawa’s public transit system will soon be able to check their iPhone, iPad, or other device to see exactly where their bus is. The city isn’t going to try to prevent the development of apps by unrelated groups, but it is imposing requirements that any of those apps include disclaimers separating themselves from the official public transit department.
GPS tracking of public transit routes is gaining traction in cities around the world, especially those that have a notorious record of schedule problems. If managers can instantly see where their fleet vehicles are, they can reroute buses, quickly dispatch assistance to broken down buses, and address any issues with drivers that are consistently late. On the consumer side, a GPS tracking app can tell a passenger if he should keep waiting for a late bus or take a cab instead.
The city of Ottawa is nearly finished installing the GPS tracking devices on its buses, and it plans to release its schedule app (and certainly initiate the development of competing ones) by the end of March.
